Automating competitive intelligence without losing judgement
Automating the collection of competitive information has become trivial. Automating the judgement drawn from it has not, and that is precisely where value is still at stake.
What can be automated without risk
- Signal collection (price changes, new pages, competitor content updates)
- Synthesis of large volumes of public information
- Alerts on predefined keywords or topics
What remains dangerous to delegate
Strategic interpretation - why a competitor is making this choice, what it reveals about their trajectory - does not reduce to a surface summary. An AI can produce a plausible and strategically wrong synthesis if it lacks sector context.
The discipline to maintain
Treat every AI-generated intelligence summary as a starting point for discussion, never as a conclusion. Human judgement remains necessary to distinguish a strategic signal from background noise.
Automating collection saves time. Automating the conclusion loses discernment, and it is often the discernment that justified the monitoring in the first place.
