Jira does not manage a project, it archives it
A pristine Jira can coexist with a project that is derailing. The tool documents decisions; it does not make them.
What the tool does well
Progress tracking, traceability, shared visibility across teams: on this terrain, ticketing tools have become indispensable and broadly effective.
What no tool does
- Sense that a sponsor is starting to doubt before they say so
- Decide that a feature must be cut to meet a date
- Arbitrate between two teams that are each right on their own scope
The risk of false management
Confusing a clean backlog with a controlled project is the most common mistake among junior delivery managers. The dashboard creates the illusion of control; real control is played out in the conversations the tool does not capture.
The tool serves judgement; it does not replace it. The day you forget this, the project keeps advancing in Jira while it retreats in reality.
